Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a Carnival barker at the age of a little girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. However, she was only in school for two years before taking a break to pursue her acting profession. The route she took did not come without challenges. While in New York, her first task was to pose stills in crime magazines. the theatre work that she wanted eluded. Following a short period as a hat-wearing club girl after which she decided to come back home to the United States and quit the job she was working in. There she made a buck as an usherette by during the day and then at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. She was a drama student in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
